In keeping with the boating safety and education elements of the WYA mission statement, we share the Department of Wildlife Resources 2020 Boating Incident Report which addresses boating dangers. Based on the 2020 Virginia data, when are I and my family at greatest risk of boating injury or death?

  • When operating a paddle craft (canoe, kayak or paddleboard)
  • In or on a vessel less than 26 feet in length
  • When engaged in fishing or recreation
  • When not wearing a life jacket
  • On Saturday or Sunday during June or July
  • On a river or heavily used lake (Anna and Smith Mountain)
  • By collision with another boat or fixed object, capsizing or falling overboard
  • As a result of vessel captain’s error in operation (especially captains who are more than 36 years old)
  • When impacted by hazardous water (wind and waves) or wake from other vessels
  • Involving poor passenger or skier behavior or improper crew lookout

Thank you Joe Littleton, WYA Member who continues to be a valuable asset to our club in keeping us apprised of important boater safety and educational information for our club members.
